about

BLACK VELVET BAND tells the tale of a young man new to the city stepping with a young lady who shows him a good time, and gets him into trouble by pickpocketing a gentleman's watch for a lark - for which they are sent away for seven years in the infamous prison camps of Van Dieman's land. it was written in the mid 1800s, and although the most famous version is set in Belfast, the song is most likely of English origin with the earliest settings being Barking, Essex. Most versions of the song, including the Dubliners version, were based upon the work of Harry Cox (1885-1971).
