about

DIRTY OLD TOWN was written by the Scottish-English folklorist and singer Ewan MacColl in 1949, as part of his play Landscape with Chimneys, and was meant to be performed during a set change. The song is about the town Ewan grew up in, the industrial town of Salford, Lancashire, located just North of Manchester. It was made famous by the great Dubliners as a single from the album Drinkin & Courtin from 1968, and later by the Pogues on their 1985 album Rum, Sodomy, & The Lash.
