about

PEATBOG SOLDIERS (Die Moorsoldaten) is a German song written in 1933 by artists imprisoned in the Börgermoor Nazi concentration camp. Words by Johann Esser (a miner) and Wolfgang Langhoff (an actor); the music was written by Rudi Goguel. It was first performed at the Zircus Konzentrani (concentration camp circus) on the 28th of August 1933. Peatbog Soldiers quickly became a famous song of protest against fascism, and was a marching song for the German volunteers of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).
