about

THE BLACKLEG MINER is a popular and still well-known Northumbrian song concerning the miners' lockout of 1844. The twin mining towns of Seaton Delaval and Seghill, where mass evictions of striking miners and their families were carried out during the lockout, are the backdrop to this bitter song against strike-breakers. Its message is simple: miners should join the union and back strikes, or they will be scorned, ostracized, bullied, and even killed.
