about

THE FIREMAN'S SONG is an English industrial ballad written by Don Bilston as part of a collection of train songs for an album entitled Farewell to Steam in 1969. The Fireman's Song or The Fireman's Lament as it is sometimes called, is about the person who stokes the locomotive fire with coal. The narrator speaks of the hardships of his position while cursing the driver of the engine for being a “idle sod.” Bilston worked as a fireman himself, and eventually became an engineer, but quit once the steam engines were replaced with diesels. He lived his last days in Telford, Shropshire, until he passed away from cancer in 2018. Wolf first heard this song on the Mark's Men album Stick 'em Up from 1970 sung by the formidable Irish ballad singer Declan Hunt.
