WHISKEY IN THE JAR is considered by many to be the most famous Irish song of all time. Our arrangement is based off of Luke Kelly's iconic performance with the Dubliners, which is set in the counties Cork and Kerry and tells of a roadside rapparee, or highwayman, who robs an English army officer (Captain Farrell), is betrayed by his lover and hauled off by the authorities, but eventually escapes and hopes to be aided by his brother. Said to be a portrayal of notorious highwayman Patrick Fleming, it was written in the mid 17th Century around the time of Cromwell's invasion of Ireland and was sung as a popular resistance song against English colonization.
